چکیده

In order to simulate red blood cell (RBC) behaviors in a flowing blood, we developed a mathematical model of an elastic RBC and their multi-body interaction based on the minimum energy principle. The results showed realistic behavior of multiple RBCs in a straight artery as well as single RBC behavior in a uniform shear flow including tumbling and tank treading motion observed in experiments. Non-Newtonian fluid property of blood was demonstrated by a novel simulation method to interactively repeat the macro-scale analysis of blood flow and the micro-scale analysis of RBC flow.

Mathematical Analysis of MHD Flow of Blood in Very Narrow Capillaries (RESEARCH NOTE)

A mathematical model for blood flow in narrow capillaries under the effect of transverse magnetic field has been investigated. It is assumed that there is a lubricating layer between red blood cells and tube wall. The transient flow of the fit red blood cell surrounded by plasma annulus in the narrow capillary is considered. The analysis of fluid flow between red cell and tube wall, when the ce...

A Biomechanical Approach for the Study of Deformation of Red Cells in Narrow Capillaries

This model focuses on the behavior of capillary-tissue fluid exchange system when the diameter of the capillary is less than that of red cell. In vivo and in vitro observations indicate that the width of the gap between the red cell and the vessel wall is generally small compared to the radius of the capillary for a single file flow of red cell in narrow vessel, particularly if the vessel diame...

Effects of non-newtonian properties of blood flow on magnetic nanoparticle targeted drug delivery

Objective(s): One applications of nanotechnology is in the area of medicine which is called nanomedicine. Primary instruments in nanomedicine can help us to detect diseases and used for drug delivery to inaccessible areas of human tissues. An important issue in simulating the motion of nanoparticles is modeling blood flow as a Newtonian or non-Newtonian fluid. Sometimes blood flow is simulated ...

Optimized Method for Reticulocyte Counting: Simple, Accurate, and Comparable to Flow Cytometry

Background: Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells with RNA, spending the final stages of their maturation in the peripheral blood. The number of reticulocytes in the peripheral blood is the salient evidence of the effectiveness of bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Currently, reticulocyte count is done manually or automatically in clinical laboratories. Difficulties and limitations of...

Multiscale Modeling of Malaria

Parasitic infectious diseases like malaria and certain hereditary hematologic disorders are often associated with major changes in the shape and viscoelastic properties of red blood cells. Such changes can disrupt blood flow and, possibly, brain perfusion, as in the case of cerebral malaria. In recent work on stochastic multiscale models—in conjunction with large-scale parallel computing—we wer...
